This is an excellent Elkhart 8D. It plays amazing, all the notes slot well, and it has the classic Elkhart 8D sound that you'd expect. I find that it plays quite a bit easier than many other 8Ds that I've played, too. There is an efficiency to playing this horn that is not present in every 8D, even the Elkharts. I really love how this particular 8D plays!
Chuck Ward did most of the restoration work on this horn for me. I had the flare of the horn replaced by Chuck Ward with an Eastlake flare that I sent to him. Chuck really worked his magic on the flare - it rings well and the horn plays great with it. Chuck also carefully worked out the dents in the bell tail to the point where you can barely tell that they were there. This horn both looks and plays great!
The valves have been rebuilt and have excellent compression (they were rebuilt before I got the horn - but clearly the rebuild was done very well). It also has a used (but great) Clebsch Strap installed on it. This horn has a ton of life left in it, and it is going to make a great horn for anyone (hobbyist, student, professional) looking for a great Elkhart 8D!
The lacquer on this horn is mostly gone, but I opted to not strip the horn of the rest of the lacquer this time just to keep the cost of this horn as low as possible. Most of the lacquer is gone, and the horn looks unlacquered except for some spots on the back side of the horn. There are minor dents and dings throughout the horn, but nothing bad at all. There is also a professionally installed patch on the bell tail where the thumb rubs against the flare. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that this is a protective patch rather than a patch covering a hole.
Included is a used but good Conn screw bell case. The case has wear from normal use, but is in overall good condition and works well. No mouthpiece is included.
